President Thein Sein on Thursday hailed the “triumph” of Myanmar’s shift from military rule as his country prepares for the historic first sitting of a new parliament following a landslide election victory by Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party.
Mr Thein Sein told the outgoing military-dominated legislature that a “democratic transformation” was under way after the National League for Democracy win in November’s poll.
His remarks underscore the measured behaviour by all sides in the months since the freest vote in more than half a century as the country makes the political transition from the era of military dictatorship.
