An exchange of pleasantries is normal when a new chief executive is appointed. But when Masahiko Uotani was chosen to head Shiseido, the Japanese cosmetics company, a year ago, he went further than usual.
“I will stake my life on this job,” he said, pledging to make Shiseido.“one of the greatest global companies for the next 50 and even 100 years”.
Was this promise not a bit over-the-top, not to mention reckless?
