Heavily armed special forces ended a siege in a Sydney café after storming the building where a gunman had held a number of people hostage for more than 16 hours.
At just after 2am local time today a number of the hostages fled the building with their arms held high above their heads. A few moments later television pictures showed commandos armed with automatic weapons throwing stun grenades into the Lindt Chocolat Café in the heart of Sydney’s business district before entering.
Police said three people, including the gunman, had been killed. Several people had been taken to hospital, including a police officer.
