China has pulled out all the stops in hosting the week-long Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting, beginning next week in Beijing.
The APEC summit of nations that collectively represent more than half the global economy is more about dialogue and non-binding commitments than implementing change.
But it provides a forum for meetings between heads of state with frayed relationships. This year Xi Jinping, China’s president, and Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister, are likely to meet on the sidelines of the forum in what would be a small but significant breakthrough after a dangerous stand-off of nearly two years between Asia’s two biggest economic powers.
