Hong Kong anti-corruption authorities have raided the home of Jimmy Lai, the media tycoon and fierce critic of the Chinese Communist party who owns the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper.
Independent Commission Against Corruption officers descended on the media baron’s Kowloon home early on Thursday, according to local media. The ICAC declined to comment on the raid or the investigation.
The flamboyant tycoon often makes headlines in Hong Kong because of his staunch criticism of the Chinese government and the anti-Beijing stance of Apple Daily, the only Chinese-language pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong. It is also published in Taiwan.
