Lufthansa is considering setting up a no-frills long-haul airline as part of a strategic overhaul to head off competition from low-cost and Middle East carriers.
Carsten Spohr, chief executive, said the intercontinental service could operate on price-sensitive or non-businessorientated routes such as second-tier Chinese cities and leisure destinations such as the Seychelles.
Lufthansa is weighing up whether to launch the unit on its own or as part of a venture with Turkish Airlines. It said the talks with Turkish were at an “advanced stage”. Flights could begin in winter 2015.
