The Chinese Communist party’s efforts to erase all trace of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre have proved a little too successful, allowing a former student leader to slip into the country to commemorate the 25th anniversary this week.
Zhou Fengsuo was fifth on the government’s list of 21 “most wanted” student demonstrators published days after tanks and troops rolled into Tiananmen Square on the evening of June 3 1989.
He was captured in the aftermath of the massacre and spent a year in prison before being released under pressure from Washington and sent into permanent exile in the US, where he became a citizen.
