Bloodshed as Kiev sends in troops to regain control of eastern cities

Clashes between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists claimed their first casualties yesterday after Kiev sent in the army to regain control of government buildings in eastern cities.

Oleksandr Turchynov, Ukraine’s acting president, said he had ordered armed forces to crack down on “terrorist troops co-ordinated by the Russian Federation” that had seized police and administrative buildings.

Arsen Avakov, Ukraine’s interior minister, said at least one Ukrainian security official had been killed and several injured in gunfire in Slavyansk. A Russian news agency said one pro-Russian militant had been killed and two injured.
