Anger over draconian new anti-protest legislation in Ukraine erupted into violence on Sunday as thousands of demonstrators clashed with riot police outside the government building in Kiev.
In the most violent scenes since largely peaceful pro-EU demonstrations began nearly two months ago, protesters seeking the removal of President Viktor Yanukovich seized buses, setting one on fire and driving others into columns of riot police guarding the government building.
Security forces fired tear gas and stun grenades and beat people with batons in response to fireworks being thrown by stick-wielding protesters. Police later tried to disperse the protesters with water cannon.
