Old barriers in way of Xi’s bid for reform

In the US the hiatus between the election of a new President and the inauguration ceremony lasts for just under three months but in China the transition period for an incoming leader can be more like three years.

In early March, Xi Jinping will formally receive his third and least important title as President of the People’s Republic of China, having already assumed the roles of Communist party general-secretary and commander in chief of the military in mid-November.

Even after that it may take him years to place his own people into positions of real power, particularly and most importantly in the military.
