The Kowakien resort near Mount Fuji has been a popular destination for Chinese writers ever since Ba Jin, the famous 20th-century novelist, became the first Chinese visitor to stay there half a century ago.
But even Kowakien, with its renowned Japanese garden and hot springs, has not been spared the sharp drop in Chinese visitors following renewed tensions over a chain of islands that both countries claim sovereignty over.
“About 70 per cent of bookings from China were cancelled in September and the outlook is worse for October,” says a representative for Fujita Kanto, the company that runs the resort.
