China’s airlines to hold on to carbon emissions data

China’s airlines will refuse to submit carbon emissions data to the European Union by this week’s deadline, throwing the ball back into Brussels’ court in a dispute about the EU’s plan to charge carriers for pollution.

“Chinese airlines will not provide the EU with any of their carbon emissions data by the deadline,” said Wei Zhenzhong, secretary-general of the China Air Transport Association.

If the EU persists with its threat to penalise Chinese airlines, industry officials said they would retaliate by measures against European airlines, which could include impounding European aircraft.
