Occupy Wall Street protesters clashed with police and blocked streets near the New York Stock Exchange but failed to shut it down as they marked a national “Day of Action” on the two-month anniversary of the movement.
The protesters, banging drums and chanting “all day, all week, shut down Wall Street” disrupted traffic and prevented some commuters from getting to work in the area.
More than 100 people had been arrested at various locations in the financial district by 10am, police spokesman Paul Browne said, mainly for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, according to Reuters. Organisers put the number of arrests much higher, saying at least 200 people had been detained.
