Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, has tried to quash talk in her government of a Greek default, warning on Tuesday that there would be no swift fix to the eurozone debt crisis.
After market turmoil this week, partly caused by mixed messages from members of Berlin’s centre-right coalition, Ms Merkel slapped down her political partners for speculating over Greek insolvency, or even an exit by Athens from the euro.
“Everyone should weigh their words very carefully. What we do not need is alarm in financial markets,” she said. “There is already enough uncertainty.”
