Taxi drivers in eastern China city strike over wages and petrol price

Over 1,000 taxi drivers in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou staged a violent strike to protest against rising petrol prices and stagnant wages, prompting the offer of a small fare rise to head off further unrest.

Taxi drivers blocked streets near Hangzhou’s bus station, stopped and in some cases attacked taxis that continued to pick up fares. A smaller taxi driver protest took place in a district of Shanghai on Monday.

The drivers’ anger reflects growing public dissatisfaction with inflation, including the rise in petrol prices.
