Afghan transition set for July

Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan’s president, has announced that local forces will take responsibility for securing seven provinces and towns in July under a plan to gradually withdraw Nato combat troops by 2014.

The US and its allies hope the handover will demonstrate that their 10-year war is coming to an end despite doubts that Afghanistan’s army and police will be capable of fighting the Taliban alone.

“Transition is the right of the Afghan people,” Mr Karzai told a graduation ceremony for military officers in Kabul on Tuesday. “We have to take this country towards peace by any means.”
