Officials insist award is not anti-Beijing

Norway’s Nobel committee mounted a staunch defence of its decision to honour the jailed Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo and has warned Beijing that China risks “crisis” if it fails to make political reforms.

Thorbjørn Jagland, committee chairman and former Norwegian prime minister, urged China to become more open to criticism as he prepared to preside over today’s Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony in Oslo.

“This is not a prize against China. This is a prize honouring those people in China upholding universal human rights,” he told reporters on Thursday.
