West sees outside help in facility’s development

Black market networks based in Pakistan and China played a leading role in equipping North Korea’s newly declared nuclear facility, according to western intelligence officials and analysts.

The revelation on Saturday that North Korea is operating more than 1,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium at its site in Yongbyon caused consternation in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo, because the country had not been considered to have such an extensive nuclear capability.

Pyongyang already has a small stockpile of plutonium but enriched uranium can provide an alternative route to weapons grade material.
