Ireland’s coalition on the brink

The Iish government’s fragile coalition showed signs of cracking, amid a volatile market reaction to its decision to seek a multibillion-euro rescue from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

The Green party announced plans to quit the Fianna Fáil-led coalition in January, forcing new elections to appease voters angry with the government’s handling of the crisis.

Eamon Gilmore, leader of the opposition Labour party, called for a dissolution of the Dail and an immediate general election.
