BP saw further success with its attempt to capture oil pouring from its leaking well deep in the Gulf of Mexico, the company said yesterday, but was still catching only about half of the estimated flow.
Tony Hayward, BP's chief executive, said he hoped the cap lowered over the well last week would eventually catch the “vast majority” of the leaking oil. However, US authorities warned that there was a “long way to go” before it reached that point.
The company is working to increase the efficiency of its containment cap, fitted to the top of broken valves on the sea bed in 5,000ft of water.
