INTERNAL DEBATE FAILS TO ALTER OFFICIAL VIEW

To sell books in China, it does no harm to be highly critical of the US.

Song Hongbing's Currency Wars in 2007 blamed two centuries of financial crises on a shadowy European and American financial elite, while the nationalist Unhappy China was a big hit last year with its claim that the US is “the Mafia don” of the global economy.

One of this year's recent launches, by economist Gong Shengli, also has a nationalist bent but its recommendations might be welcomed in Washington. China is Very Happy is a manifesto for the argument that China's continued rise needs a strong currency.
