BANKS LINE UP FOR AIA DEAL

The banks backing the Prudential's $35.5bn bid for AIG's Asian arm will say today that they have spread the risk of underwriting the UK company's massive rights issue among 30 banks, according to people close to the deal.

The Pru must raise the equivalent of $20bn from equity investors to fund its bid for AIA, the Asian business of the stricken US insurance group.

The issue had originally been underwritten by just three banks: Credit Suisse, JPMorgan Chase and HSBC. At least one large Asian sovereign wealth fund has committed to sub- underwrite several billion dollars of the issue.
