Pressure is mounting on Richard Sharp to stand down as chair of the BBC after some of the grandees of UK media warned that conflict-of-interest claims against the former Goldman Sachs banker made his position unsustainable.

The broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby and former Fleet Street editor Baroness Patience Wheatcroft are among those calling for Sharp to quit over concerns he was too close to Boris Johnson when the former prime minister recommended him for the post.
