Gulf states condemn India’s ruling BJP over insults to Islam

Backlash against party officials’ remarks shows diplomatic risks of divisive identity politics

Gulf states and other Islamic countries have strongly criticised Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party over insulting comments about the Prophet Mohammed made by two of its spokespeople.

Countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, along with the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), condemned the remarks, which were made in recent days on television and Twitter. Qatar added that it wanted New Delhi to apologise publicly.

The backlash highlighted the risk that the Modi government’s embrace of muscular Hindu nationalist identity politics will damage India’s relations with important international partners.
