Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s overtures to India’s beleaguered middle class are being tested as voters in Delhi go to the polls on Wednesday amid a broad economic slowdown.
Modi’s Bharatiya Janata party is seeking to revive enthusiasm among its middle- and upper-class base and build on the momentum of two state election wins late last year, after it lost its parliamentary majority in national polls in June.
Delhi, a territory that includes India’s seat of government New Delhi, has long been an elusive political prize for Modi.
