More than half of university students now need paid work to cover costs

A greater number of UK university students are struggling to juggle paid work with their studies and social lives, according to an annual think-tank survey, with the poorest students most effected by cost of living pressures.

There had been a “step change” in the number of students working to make ends meet since 2023 as a result of rising outgoings and inadequate maintenance loans, the Higher Education Policy Institute said on Thursday.
