Russia’s defence minister has vowed to strengthen military ties with North Korea on a visit to Pyongyang to mark the 70th anniversary of the Korean war armistice, as the two countries seek to deepen relations in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The trip by Sergei Shoigu this week marked the first high-level foreign delegation allowed into North Korea since leader Kim Jong Un sealed his country’s borders in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
After meeting his North Korean counterpart on Wednesday, Shoigu noted the two countries’ “common border and rich history of co-operation.”
