Macron urges French to save energy in face of Russian threat to gas supply

President warns in Bastille Day interview that Moscow is prepared to use energy as a ‘weapon’

French president Emmanuel Macron has called on businesses, government agencies and households to do more to save energy as France braces for Russia to cut off gas imports and the war in Ukraine drags on.

“Russia has already begun cutting off gas deliveries, and it is sending the message that it will use energy as a weapon in the war,” said Macron in a televised interview to mark the Bastille Day holiday.

“We must prepare for a scenario where we have to manage completely without Russian gas . . . it is probable. We need a general mobilisation.”
