Roman Abramovich hit with sanctions by UK

Sale of Chelsea football club paused as oligarch and six other Russian businessmen are hit with asset freeze and travel ban

Roman Abramovich was one of seven Russians hit with a full asset freeze and travel ban by the UK government on Thursday, in the country’s most aggressive crackdown on oligarchs since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The freeze means Abramovich cannot move forward with his planned sale of Chelsea football club, UK government officials said.

Abramovich, who also holds Israeli and Portuguese citizenships, is accused by the UK of having benefited financially and otherwise for decades from his close links to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
