Australia to compensate ‘Stolen Generations’ survivors

A$378m redress scheme for indigenous child removal policies announced decade after national apology

Australia has agreed to pay compensation to survivors of the “Stolen Generations”, the tens of thousands of indigenous children who were forcibly removed from their parents under state-sponsored assimilation policies.

In a symbolic move, which was announced on Thursday, each survivor living in federal territories will receive a one-off payment of A$82,000 ($60,000) to recognise the harm caused to them and help their healing.

The A$378.5m redress scheme is part of a wider A$1bn funding package aimed at addressing financial hardship, social inequality and discrimination faced by Aboriginal communities.
