China embraces rail to transport goods to Europe

Manufacturers turn to ‘steel camels’ in face of shipping container shortages, high costs and delays

Chinese manufacturers are seeking to bypass shipping delays by exporting their goods over land, with a wave of demand in Europe stoking a sharp rise in transcontinental rail freight.

The country’s rapid recovery from the pandemic has helped it dominate global trade over the second half of 2020, with lockdowns sharpening foreign appetite for its manufactured goods from electronics to home appliances.

But pressure on transit times at sea and container shortages have made land exports over Russia and central Asia an attractive alternative, according to businesses and agencies.
