Donald Trump and Joe Biden clash over coronavirus in final debate

Tone is more civil than first encounter as US president tries to close gap in polls

Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger Joe Biden clashed over the best way to tackle the coronavirus pandemic in a final presidential debate on Thursday night that was less chaotic than their first encounter.

Mr Biden slammed Mr Trump over his handling of the crisis, accusing the president of hiding the severity of the threat from the US public and having no plan to tackle a disease that has killed 220,000 Americans.

“Anyone who is responsible for that many deaths should not remain as president of the United States of America,” Mr Biden said at the debate in Nashville, Tennessee, which comes 12 days before the November 3 election.
