London faces tighter Covid curbs within days, officials warn

Mayor Sadiq Khan and ministers discuss restrictions on socialising indoors

Londoners are to be banned from socialising with other households indoors within days, according to civic leaders in the capital, as infection rates soar in many boroughs.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, said it was “inevitable” that the city would pass the “trigger point” at which he would call for the capital to enter into the government’s tier 2 of “high alert” Covid-19 restrictions.

That threshold is understood to be 100 infections per 100,000 people and the average across Greater London has reached 90, Mr Khan said.
