Biden accepts nomination with pledge to ‘restore soul of America’

Democratic former vice-president attacks Trump’s handling of coronavirus as ‘worst performance of any nation’

Joe Biden accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday night with a speech pledging to restore the “soul of America”, as the former vice-president prepared for the final stretch of the election battle against Donald Trump.

Speaking from Wilmington, Delaware, Mr Biden delivered the most important speech of his five-decade political career after securing the nomination on his third attempt at running for the White House.

He said: “It’s with great honour that I accept this nomination for president of the United States . . . While I’ll be a Democratic candidate, I’ll be an American president.”
