Suffused with saffron, the colour used in sacred Hindu rituals that has been adopted as the badge of nationalists, the ceremony was symbolic. In effect, India’s prime minister had inaugurated a new era that placed the Hindu majority at the centre of this multi-religious, staggeringly diverse nation.
