Narendra Modi is making history in India. Earlier this month he laid the foundation stone for a temple to Lord Ram at the site where a Mughal mosque once stood.

It was the latest twist in a long, bitter dispute over the contested holy ground. Suffused with saffron, the colour used in sacred Hindu rituals that has been adopted as the badge of nationalists, the ceremony was symbolic. In effect, India’s prime minister had inaugurated a new era that placed the Hindu majority at the centre of this multi-religious, staggeringly diverse nation.
