A massive explosion has devastated large parts of Beirut, injuring scores of people and causing widespread damage across the Lebanese capital.
At least 10 people were killed, according to reports from the Reuters news agency citing security sources. Hamad Hassan, the health minister, told a local television station that there was “a very high number of injuries”.
Interior minister Mohamad Fahmi said that initial investigations suggested that the explosion was caused by confiscated explosive material, according to local media. Badri Daher, director-general of Lebanon’s customs authority, linked the explosion to nitrate chemicals being stored at the port, in comments to a local news channel.
