India shuts down mobile networks as protests spread

Indian authorities have banned demonstrations and shut down mobile networks in New Delhi and cities around the country, rounding up scores of protesters as they battled to contain a backlash against a citizenship law that favours non-Muslims.

Among those detained was Ramachandra Guha, one of the country’s most prominent historians. Mr Guha, a historian of modern India, was hauled off by police in the tech hub of Bangalore. He was accused of violating a ban on protests and held for hours before being released.

Narendra Modi’s government implemented Section 144 of the criminal code, which prohibits public gatherings, in the capital New Delhi as well as districts in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, and Karnataka, home to Bangalore. Police have made hundreds of arrests since the protests erupted last week.
