Hong Kong’s chief executive said on Tuesday that she had never tendered her resignation after a leaked audio recording obtained by Reuters revealed she told business people that she would quit if she had a choice.
Carrie Lam told reporters that the comments were made in a private lunch with industry and social leaders and that she was “disappointed” the recording was leaked. However, she stressed she had “never tendered any resignation to the central people’s government”.
“For a chief executive to have caused this huge havoc to Hong Kong is unforgivable.” Ms Lam said in English in the recording reported by Reuters on Monday. “If I have a choice,” she said. “The first thing is to quit, having made a deep apology.”
