British prime minister Boris Johnson yesterday insisted the UK must leave the EU on October 31, fuelling expectations he will call a general election if lawmakers defy him in a key vote on the issue this week.
As an alliance of opposition and Conservative MPs prepare to introduce legislation in parliament today aimed at avoiding a no-deal Brexit, Mr Johnson declared there were “no circumstances” in which he would delay Britain’s departure from the EU.
On a day of high drama at Westminster, the so-called “Rebel Alliance” unveiled a bill that will require Mr Johnson to agree an extension to Britain’s EU membership if he cannot secure a Brexit deal with the EU by the end of October.
