TikTok parent company ByteDance said it was establishing a new data centre in India as it rushes to smooth rocky relations with New Delhi and avoid a potential ban.
The Chinese tech company is coming under growing pressure in India, its top overseas market, where legislators and lobbyists accuse the company of spreading obscene content and sharing user data with the government in Beijing.
ByteDance’s announcement that it will build a $100m Indian data centre comes just days after the country’s IT and electronics ministry sent the company a list of 24 questions about its operations centred on the protection of minors and data collection.
