The US House of Representatives on Tuesday voted 240-187 to censure Donald Trump for calling on four minority Democratic female lawmakers to “go back” to where they came from, a resolution that was backed by only four Republicans.
The vote came after a raucous debate on the House floor, where members from both parties attacked each other with unusual viciousness. The resolution condemned the president for “racist comments that have legitimised and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of colour”.
Ahead of the vote, Mr Trump rejected suggestions that his comments were racist and urged Republicans to hold the line.
