For all her blockbuster billing, the nomination of Christine Lagarde as the eurozone’s top economic official has raised more than a few eyebrows at the European Central Bank’s headquarters in Frankfurt.
Ms Lagarde is a lawyer who has no formal economics training. While that is also true for US Federal Reserve chair Jay Powell, the International Monetary Fund’s managing director has no experience of working in a central bank either.
Few can deny that she lacks the policy expertise that has made incumbent Mario Draghi so successful.
