Donald Trump, the US president, said he received a “beautiful letter” from Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart, urging the two countries to “work together” to solve their trade tensions, as a pivotal negotiating session was due to start in Washington.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Mr Trump said he expected to speak to Mr Xi “soon”, ahead of the 5pm start of talks between Liu He, the Chinese vice-premier, and top US officials led by Robert Lighthizer, trade representative, and Steven Mnuchin, Treasury secretary.
“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” Mr Trump said, adding: “We’re going to find out about China tonight.”
