The Reiwa era will begin on May 1 when Emperor Akihito abdicates and crown prince Naruhito ascends to the throne of the world’s oldest continuous monarchy.
While almost unknown outside of Japan, the name of the Imperial era — which forms the basis for Japan’s calendar — has been the subject of weeks of feverish media speculation.
