Analysts diverge on Chinese restrictions of Australian coal imports

Commodities and foreign exchange markets were  rattled by reports China was restricting the access of Australian coking coal to its ports. 

A Reuters report on Thursday, citing an unnamed official, said the Chinese port of Dalian had banned Australian coking coal imports.

Officials in Beijing said import controls on the key steelmaking resource were part of broader measures to cut pollution. And Australian officials have  sought to dismiss concerns that the move was motivated by tensions between Beijing and Canberra over Australia’s blocking of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei taking part in the country’s 5G network.
