An internationally lauded photojournalist has been detained in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang after going missing over three weeks ago.
Lu Guang, best known for his work documenting the human impact of environmental pollution and Aids, had gone to Xinjiang to meet other photographers. Xu Xiaoli, Mr Lu’s wife, told the Financial Times that she last had contact with him on November 3. Soon after, she says, he was taken by public security officials in Xinjiang’s capital of Urumqi before being detained in Kashgar.
An estimated 1m Uighur Muslims have been extralegally detained in specially built “ re-education centres” in a state-organised campaign in Xinjiang.
