Donald Trump has lowered expectations of a new round of US trade negotiations with China, putting at risk an effort by Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary, to rekindle a dialogue with Beijing.
In a tweet yesterday the US president, who has threatened to press ahead with new tariffs on $200bn of Chinese products, said the US felt “no pressure to make a deal”. China, he added, was feeling all the heat to stop the trade war.
“Our markets are surging, theirs are collapsing. We will soon be taking in Billions in Tariffs & making products at home. If we meet, we meet?” he wrote.
