Mike Pompeo looks to ‘reset’ US-Pakistan relations

Washington wants to “reset” its troubled relationship with Pakistan, Mike Pompeo has said, as the US secretary of state arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday to meet Imran Khan for the first time since the former cricketer became prime minister.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a series of meetings in Pakistan and India, Mr Pompeo said he wanted to use his trip to Islamabad to focus on reconciliation in Afghanistan, as talks between the US and the Taliban gather pace.

Mr Pompeo said: “I wanted to get out there at the beginning of [Mr Khan's] time in an effort to reset the relationship between the two countries.”
