Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin have used a bilateral meeting in Germany to signal a desire for a working relationship despite strong disagreements in many areas.
The German chancellor and Russian president met at Ms Merkel’s Meseberg castle retreat north of Berlin, the first time she had hosted Mr Putin one on one in Germany since before Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
The Kremlin said the pair discussed the transit of gas to Europe from Russia, the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, the Iran nuclear deal, and the consequences of the US administration’s trade and economic policies for third countries.
