China’s commerce ministry said on Wednesday it could not accept Donald Trump’s latest tariffs on a further $200bn of imports from the country and that it will have no choice but to respond to the US move.

Mr Trump told the US trade representative to begin preparations for levies of 10 per cent on the Chinese products in the latest escalation of a trade war between the two countries.
